Magical Brownsea Island

Take a walk along Poole Harbour and you’re unlikely to miss Brownsea Island.

Big, green and magically alluring, this local treasure is the largest island in the harbour and a haven for nature and history lovers alike. Its impressive natural habitat and fascinating past is a heady combination.

Once a hideout for pirates, the island’s chequered history also includes being pillaged by Vikings, blitzed by Nazi bombers and used as a stronghold for both Henry VIII and the Civil War. Couple that with the island’s abundant wildlife, which includes bold and beautiful peacocks and mischievous red squirrels, it’s no wonder Brownsea Island has become a legend in its own right.

You can catch the ferry from Poole Quay or take the ‘yellow boat’ scenic cruise to the Island. However you explore this beautiful island, be sure to remember its colourful past and enjoy its timeless presence. And if you’re lucky, you may well spot a red squirrel darting around its woodland.
