Following on from last year's success, the National Trust is hosting a Wessex Walking Weekend on the 27th and 28th June 2009. Two of our local trust properties will have walks for you to enjoy.
Corfe Castle has 'Smugglers' Ways' on Saturday morning or 'Three Quarries' on Sunday morning, whilst Brownsea Island has 'All about the Island over lunchtime on both Saturday and Sunday.
Brownsea Island: All about the Island!
Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June, 11am-1pm. A walk to explore the history, mystery, adventure and wildlife on the island. Normal admission charges apply. Booking essential, tel: 01202 707744.
Corfe Castle: Smugglers' Ways
Saturday 27 June, starts 10:30am, allow 2 hours. 'Smugglers' Ways' is a walk for families. Smugglers of old led double lives. Quarrymen by day, as soon as night fell, they carried smuggled goods across Corfe Common. Start at Corfe Castle ticket office. Donations welcome. Booking essential; tel: 01929 480 609.
Corfe Castle: Three Quarries
Sunday 28 June, starts 10:30am. On the 'Three Quarries' walk, families can discover the location of these fascinating and mysterious quarries. Hear tales of hardship and danger, of when men and boys worked underground from dawn to dusk. The tour includes a visit to the Burngate Stone Centre, part of the Purbeck Keystone Project. The centre is a space where people can learn, practice and refine the skill of stone carving. Start at the car park in Acton (GR SY988787). Donations welcome. Booking essential; tel: 01929 480 609.
